Swedish Massage is the foundation of many of types of massage modalities such as remedial massage, deep tissue massage, etc. It generally involves using broad strokes with the whole of the therapists hands, in flowing strokes at varying speeds and intensity. The overarching objective of Swedish massage is to induce deep relaxation while improving circulation in the body.
Swedish massage is applied directly on the skin, using oil, usually while the client is lying down, although clients can also be treated with while sitting down. Therapists are trained to cover (drape) the client with a sheet or towels and to uncover only the area which is being treated. The most basic stroke, called effleurage, involves stroking the body in a rhythm with moderate pressure. Petrissage strokes on the other hand involve more of a kneading movement, like in kneading bread, which help to relieve muscle tension and increase local blood circulation. Both effleurage and petrissage strokes feel extremely relaxing. Other strokes include deep frictions, used to break down adhesions in soft tissue fibres, and percussion or cupping.
Swedish massage is suitable for people of all ages, seeking relaxation and general health benefits. Therapists are also trained in providing pregnancy massage to pregnant women. Pregnant women are can lie face down (if an appropriate table is available), lie on their side, or even on their back with the right amount of cushioning under their head/upper back and knees. Alternatively, they can also be treated seated.
