What do Osteopaths specialise in?
Osteopaths are Allied Health Practitioners who diagnose and treat mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. They emphasize the relationship between structure and function, and the way it can be affected through manipulative therapy.
Osteopaths use a wide range of techniques including soft tissue massage to release muscles, tendons and ligaments, and a range of joint mobilization techniques. Osteopaths are also trained in the use of high velocity and low amplitude (HVLA) joint manipulations, such as those used by chiropractors.
Many osteopaths are also trained in exercise therapy and will prescribe exercises to their clients to help them correct structural misalignments, with the intention of restoring proper function.
The Alternative to Osteopathy – Advanced Musculoskeletal Therapy At Limassol Massage in Cyprus
Our Musculoskeletal therapist, Sunil, operating out of Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol, provides treatments which in many ways are similar to those provided by osteopaths.
Sunil is an orthopaedic massage therapist, with skills in assessing and correcting structural alignment in the body. The corrections are carried out through soft tissue manipulation, joint mobilization and release and using exercise therapy.
Sunil’s joint release techniques are different from the HVLA ones used by osteopaths and chiropractors. He employs gentle, targeted, joint challenge techniques to misaligned joints, giving the body time to release the entrapment and correct its alignment slowly using its in-built self-correction mechanism, known as the orthotropic effect.
With an in-depth understanding of musculoskeletal disorders, solid anatomical knowledge and palpation skills, and a wide range of soft tissue release techniques to draw on, Sunil’s treatments involved very targeted release of the muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, fascia, and joint capsules to free up restrictions in the body’s function. Together with the joint release techniques described above, the result is improved structural alignment and optimum function.
With training in rehabilitation techniques and exercise therapy, received from elite sports physiotherapists, Sunil also provides self-help and self-management instruction to his clients to help them address the root causes of their misalignments. This helps his clients take the reigns back in managing their own health.
