What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is pain felt deep in the buttocks or down the back of the legs, and can be caused by a number of different underlying issues. Sciatica is not really a condition itself but refers to Sciatica pain experienced from one of these conditions. At Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol, we have a number of Sciatica treatment options for you.
Sciatic pain can be infrequent, being triggered by specific movements such as standing up, or be constant and quite debilitating. Symptoms usually depend on the location and severity of the nerve impingement, and may involve the following:
- Pain is often described as burning, tingling, numbing or shooting
- Constant pain, usually in only one side of the buttock or leg
- Sometimes, there may be associated weakness in the foot or leg
- Difficulty standing up from a sitting position or walking
Assessments at Ravel Massage Limassol – Sciatica Treatment
The first step with establishing any kind of treatment plan for Sciatica is to identify the location and nature of the sciatic nerve impingement.
There are a number of common locations for this to happen. Often the impingement is in the lower back itself. This can be due to a problem with a disc in the spine, most commonly between the L5 and S1 vertebrae at the base of your spine. The disc may be bulging out, pushing on one of the nerve roots. Another possibility is that the spinal exit for the nerve may have started to close up due to bony deposits. This condition is called intervertebral foraminal stenosis. There are also other areas, such as deep in the gluteal muscles, where the sciatic nerves may be impinged.
We use a number of orthopaedic tests to determine the likely location of the impingement, causing your Sciatic pain. The findings from these tests guide us in developing your treatment plan, and providing appropriate treatment.
Limassol Massage for Sciatica Relief
Our advanced orthopaedic massage can be extremely beneficial for addressing Sciatica symptoms. For people with disc bulges, we provide targeted massage therapy to take the edge of the muscles which are distorting your lower back, resulting in uneven pressure on the discs. The Sciatica treatment usually involves working gently on muscles in your lower back, and also releasing deep hip flexor muscles. It is very important not to release the lower back too much in the early phases, as this can worsen you symptoms.
Nerve entrapment in the buttocks is released by reducing tightness in the deep gluteal muscles. Importantly also, we address the client’s overall alignment issues, helping to prevent the offending muscles from tightening up again and exerting pressure on the nerve. Our Sciatica exercises form a very important part of the treatment plan, as they help you to manage Sciatic pain, reduce your symptoms, and prevent a recurrence of the issue. This is an integral part of our overall treatment plan.
