What Causes Knee Pain? Assessments at Ravel Therapies Massage in Cyprus
The knee joint would appear at first sight to be a very simple joint, moving in just one plane, but in reality it is quite different. The knee is a complex joint capable of moving in more than one plane, with a number of structures performing precise roles. It is therefore important to understand the client’s precise knee pain causes in order to provide effective knee pain relief. This is what we do at our Ravel Therapies Limassol Massage in Cyprus.
The knee joint is surrounded by a capsule, ligaments to restrict range of movement, and tendons attached to muscles which move the joint. Additionally, knee joints contain smooth, flat discs called menisci, which are pulled in and out of the joint by specific muscles when the knee moves. These discs as well as the ligaments around and inside the knee are quite susceptible to injury, particularly in very active people, such as those participating in sports.
Assessing the client will require firstly understanding their knee problems. Is it an anterior knee pain, medial knee pain, lateral knee pain, or back of knee pain? What activities cause their knee pain? Does the client have knee pain when bending, or is the knee pain when running? The therapist will then carry out specific orthopaedic tests to further assess the client’s knee problems and check the various structures involved. These include checking the stability of all the ligaments, systematically isolating and checking each muscle/tendon, and checking the integrity of the menisci. In some cases, the client may be asked to obtain a scan in order that further investigations can be carried out, for example to check the extent of knee arthritis which may be present.
How to Stop Knee Pain – Knee pain treatment at Ravel Therapies Massage in Cyprus
As part of the knee injury or pain assessment, we also check the client’s walking or running gait and observe the client through movements such as squats, where appropriate. This helps us identify deficiencies in the client’s movement, which may have led to the knee injury in the first place.
Our treatment focuses initially on directly treating the affected structures where possible through remedial massage and orthopedic massage techniques. We start with providing a relaxation massage to the area and then quickly focus on the affected structures. Deep structures such as the ACL and PCL ligaments, or the menisci which cannot be directly accessed are treated using certain specialized muscle energy techniques, as well as joint distraction to promote nutrition of the knee joint and speed up the removal of toxins.
In cases of osteoarthritis, we check the clients overall hydration capabilities and magnesium / calcium balances using kinesiology energetic techniques. Using Kinergetic techniques, we may be able to help reset muscles and systems which are preventing absorption of magnesium, as the lack of magnesium absorption can upset the magnesium / calcium balance and has been linked to osteoarthritis. In extreme cases, knee replacement may be indicated.
We then provide deep tissue massage to the dominant muscles, specific to each client, which may be causing muscle imbalances around the knee joint leading to their knee pain. As part of assessing the imbalances, we also provide knee pain exercises to assist with strengthening the weak muscles which are contributing to the problem.
