Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol – Lateral Hip Pain Causes

Lateral hip pain occurs for a number of reasons, ranging from inflammation of the lateral hip bursa to a strain in the gluteus medius muscle, located on the side of the hip. Read on to see how we treated Mr A* for lateral hip pain at our Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol clinic.

Client Hip Pain – Symptoms

Mr A is in his late 60’s, and still actively working in a manual handling position. He arrived at our clinic in early 2016 with acute right hip pain, and in particular, suffered from hip pain when sleeping on side.  He was also unable to cross his right leg over on his left when sitting. Mr A has been suffering from this pain for the last several weeks, and it came on gradually over a few months.

Our Assessment

After carrying out a few basic movement and orthopaedic tests, Sunil quickly ascertained that the pain and range of movement limitation was most likely associated with a strain in the gluteus medius muscle, located on the side of the hip. It seemed that this condition could be treated very effectively with targeted cross-fibre massage, myofascial release and muscle energy techniques. However, Sunil was keen to understand why this pain came on in the first place, given there was no specific trauma or event that the client could recollect.

After a few additional muscle length tests, and a prone musculoskeletal assessment it became apparent that the client had a short and tight left hip flexor muscle, causing a compensatory response from a muscle called the QL on the right hand side when standing. This in turn was lifting the client’s right hip and adding strain to the gluteus medius muscle, making it vulnerable to injury, leading to pain.

Lateral hip pain treatment at Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol

The above assessment helped Sunil develop a clear treatment plan for Mr A. He provided twice-weekly orthopaedic massage treatments to the affected gluteus medius muscle for 2 weeks. He also used myofascial and relaxing massage strokes to adjacent areas to reduce the overall myofascial strain across the area. Sunil addressed the underlying issue also, by using Bowen Therapy and cross fibre massage techniques to release the left hip flexor, and give the client training in performing specific hip pain exercises to address the short flexor.

The Result

The client reported an immediate and noticeable improvement after the first treatment itself. The pain was fully resolved by the third treatment, which was used to revise all the exercises the client needed to perform for maintenance to prevent a recurrence of the injury.
