What is a Joint Mobilisation Technique? – Joint Mobilisation at Ravel massage Limassol

We use our joint mobilisation technique integrally with our advanced remedial massage and musculoskeletal therapy treatments at our clinics, Ravel Massage Limassol in Cyprus.

Joint mobilisation is a very broad technique, meaning “movement of a joint”. However, it is the intent and specifics of each joint mobilisation technique, which give rise to the desired therapeutic effect for that technique. Generally, it is good practice to keep our joints mobile. For example, people with arthritis will often be advised to “keep their joints moving”. However, there can be exceptions to his, for example when a joint is injured and inflamed. The general rule of thumb is to work within your pain-free range of movement, as pain is your body’s tool to help you minimise further injury.

Most joints in our musculoskeletal system are “synovial” joints, lined by a soft tissue “joint capsule”, which encloses the joint. The capsule encloses the ends of involved bones as well as a “synovial fluid” which keeps the joint well nourished and keeps the ends of the bones healthy.

Joint mobilisation techniques, especially when carried out passively (that is, by the therapist rather than the client themselves) help to pump this fluid out of the joint, bringing in fresh fluid, thus brining in new nutrition and eliminating waste products. This is one of the reasons joint mobilisation is useful for managing conditions like osteoarthritis.

Massage Limassol – How Joint Mobilisation Techniques are applied at Ravel Therapies

At Ravel Therapies, we incorporate joint mobilization into massage techniques. For example, mobilizing a joint while simultaneously stroking a muscle across its fibres helps to unwind the joint capsule and soft tissue fibres surrounding it. This can help to “reset” the joint into its correct position. This technique is applied gently and rhythmically allowing the body to relax.

Other mobilization techniques may be applied in isolation, that is, without simultaneous muscle release. These techniques may be applied specifically to “pump” the joint fluid, and to slowly expand the pain-free range of the client.

It is the intention of each application that changes the subtle nature of the technique and drives the desired therapeutic outcome.
