Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol – Jaw and Neck Pain Causes

The jaw joint, also known as the Temporomandibular joint (or TMJ) is close associated with mechanics of the neck, and the other way around. One example of this is the forward head position, so common among office workers, which tends to lower the lower jaw. The brain’s response is to tighten the muscles, which close the jaw. These overloaded muscles eventually weaken, developing trigger points, causing pain and sometimes jaw clicking. This case study is on how Sunil helped Mr B* , a client who suffered extensively from jaw and neck pain.

Jaw and Neck Pain – Symptoms

Mr B had been having twice weekly Chiropractic manipulations to his neck for neck pain for the last two years. The improvements usually lasted only a day or so each time, so Mr B consulted with a dentist on the Chiropractor’s recommendations.

Over the course of the next year, the client had his jaw repeatedly adjusted by the dentist and a large number of crowns inserted. By the time My B presented at Ravel Massage Limassol, his symptoms were far worse than when they had started three year prior. In addition to jaw pain, the client now had a lot of jaw clicking also.

Our Assessment

As the client’s symptoms had been going on for so long, Sunil carried out a very detailed examination. He studied the lumbar and cervical CT scans which were presented, and checked the client’s spinal alignment from the head down to the coccyx. Over a number of sessions, the client’s tailbone was regularly found to be deviated to the side, and also his left hip flexor was short, playing a role in the right disc bulge). His left cervical facet joints were fixed open, with the neck turned to the right.

Over a few sessions, Sunil concluded that the mild lower back scoliosis noted was causing a compensatory effect in the neck, result in cervical facet joints repeatedly getting fixated, despite releasing after treatment. This also explained why the regular Chiropractic cervical manipulations were not lasting for more than a day at a time.

TMJ Treatment at Ravel Therapies Limassol, Cyprus

Once the underlying causes of Mr B’s condition were established, the treatment plan was pretty straight forward. The focus would need to be on improving the lower back alignment, whilst providing targeted rehabilitation to improve the client’s spinal alignment also. Bowen Therapy, cross fibre massage therapy and muscle energy techniques were used to release the left hip flexor. As a side-effect of this treatment, the client reported that his disc bulge symptoms subsided as well.

Joint release techniques were used to release the cervical joint fixations at each visit – although this was a secondary problem, it did provide relief for the client. Various massage techniques were used to reduce tension in the jaw muscles also. Myofascial massage therapy was provided to release the anterior neck flexors, which were contributing to a forward head position.

Jaw and Neck Pain – The Result

Mr B reported a significant improvement in his jaw and neck pain after the first few visits and decided to stop the Chiropractic treatments. He also decided to reduce down the dental adjustments, as soon as he felt his jaw had “settled” a little bit. The client booked in for several weekly treatments, where the focus was on restoring spinal alignment, and more importantly, by showing Mr B exactly what he needed to do to maintain this alignment.

The client is currently on a monthly maintenance plan. Due to this condition being a very long-term, chronic issue, we believe the client may need another 10-12 monthly treatments before his body starts to hold its own alignment with the exercises given.
