What do Chiropractors specialise in?
Chiropractors are Allied Health Practitioners who diagnose and treat mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. They believe that correcting alignment of the spine and pelvis can improve our general health and wellbeing via the nervous system, which controls the operation of our muscles and organs.
Chiropractors largely employ manual therapy techniques, in particular those connected with manipulating joints of the spine, pelvis and other joints in the body. Some Chiropractors also use Kinesiology techniques to guide their treatments, and other “energetic” types of techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
The main focus of Chiropractic manual therapy is on correcting misalignments of joints, called subluxations, using high velocity and low amplitude (HVLA) thrusts to the joints in question. These thrusts or “clicks” are forceful and sometimes take the joints beyond their normal physiological range of movement, toward their anatomical end range. Although Chiropractors are highly trained specialists, these maneuvers are inherently riskier than low velocity mobilisations carried out by a number of therapists including our Musculoskeletal therapist.
The Alternative to Chiropractic – Advanced Musculoskeletal Therapy at Ravel Limassol Massage Cyprus
At Ravel Massage Limassol, our Musculoskeletal Therapist, agrees that a well-aligned spine can promote improved health and wellbeing. He has learned and developed advanced techniques to release trapped (or subluxed) joints in the spine, ribs and pelvis. His techniques, however, are different from the HVLA ones used by Chiropractors. He employs gentle, targeted, joint challenge techniques to the subluxed joints, giving the body time to release the entrapment and correct its alignment slowly using its in-built self-correction mechanism.
In addition to advanced massage and joint release techniques, Sunil strongly believes that if the causative factors of the subluxations are not addressed, then the joint fixations will keep returning. He does not agree with long term treatment plans which result in clients becoming dependent on weekly treatments of joint manipulations. With training in rehabilitation techniques and exercise therapy by elite sports physiotherapists, Sunil also provides self-help and self-management instruction to his clients to help them address the root causes of their misalignments. In this way, he cultivates a relationship of partnering with his clients instead of one of dependency. This helps his clients take the reins back in managing their own health.
