We employ a wide range of orthopaedic remedial massage techniques as outlined below. You can also find out more about the specific expertise of each of our practitioners using the menu above. For information on our Rehabilitation instruction, click here.

Remedial / Deep Tissue Massage Techniques

As the name suggests, deep tissue massage techniques are aimed at working through the superficial layers directly on the deeper soft tissue such as muscles, tendons and ligaments. Deep tissue massage may be applied using fingers, knuckles, fist or elbow, and includes a number of techniques. More information about our remedial / deep tissue massage techniques »

Myofascial Release

All structures in the body such as bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and organs are covered in a thin sheath called fascia. Fascia gives form to these structures, acting as network of scaffolding, and most intriguingly, all fascia in the body is connected via an intricate web. Myofascia, which is fascia around muscles, often develops adhesions which restrict the movement of muscles and their fibres. We regularly employ myofascial release techniques to help free up muscle movement and create a more complete release of the soft tissue. More information about our myofascial release therapy »

Joint Release Techniques

There are many joints in the body such as in the spine, ribs and pelvis which are designed to have limited range of movement to keep us stable. These joints often get “jammed” or “fixated” from poor biomechanics, usually with corresponding tightness in the surrounding muscles, causing pain and stiffness. When this happens, it is vital for the joint fixations to be released in addition to the soft tissue, if the client is to experience lasting pain relief. Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger points are nodule like spots that form in taut bands of muscles fibres, often as a result of chronic posture related issues or injuries. Trigger points often refer pain to other parts of the body, via the fascia that surrounds all muscles. Trigger points are released using a number of techniques which we regularly incorporate into our treatments when required. More information on our trigger point therapy »

Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle energy techniques (MET) include a range of techniques all of which involve the client providing very gentle resistance against the therapist. They are also sometimes referred to as PNF techniques (proprioceptive neurological facilitation), of which PNF stretching is widely known and used by personal trainers.

MET is believed to work by providing the brain an opportunity to reset information it is carrying in relation to specific muscle fibres. Due to its effectiveness, we use MET extensively in out treatments interspersed with other techniques. More information on our muscle energy technique »

Swedish Massage Strokes

Swedish massage stokes are generally whole of hand, long and broad strokes applied rhythmically. They are the foundation from which many remedial massage techniques emerge, and are incorporated into most of our treatments. More information on our Swedish massage techniques »

Range of Movement

The range of movement technique involves simply moving a joint through its pain-free range of movement. Depending on the intended outcome this can be done actively (by the client), passively (by the therapist), or with resistance (movement by client with therapist applying resistance). In addition to this, we often apply assisted range of movement techniques where gentle assistance is provided to the client in moving a joint through its full range. This can be a very effective treatment for vertebrae that are misaligned and fixated.

Range of movement techniques can help reduce inflammation, promote nutritional exchange, and restore proper neurological function in the joint capsule and surrounding tissues.

Joint Mobilisation

Joint mobilisation techniques are similar to range of movement techniques and are designed to free up restrictions in joint movement. We often apply a pumping action to joints, the cyclical compression and decompression of which promotes fluid exchange and nutrition for the joint capsule. This technique can be extremely effective for managing conditions like arthritis and cartilage degeneration. More information about our joint mobilisation technique »

Sports Massage

Sports massage can be considered as a collection of specialised remedial massage techniques designed to help you prevent injury, warm up muscles up prior to an activity, and help the body recover quickly after an activity. Sports massage is often broken down into three distinct categories: pre-event, post-event and fine-tuning. More information about our sports massage therapy »

Prenatal and Postnatal massage (pregnancy massage)

Pregnancy massage is not really a technique as such, but a type of massage therapy which requires additional skill and care, and knowledge about the risks and contraindications associated with pregnancy. For example, pregnant women have a much greater risk of developing blood clots in the legs and hips, so it is important to use lighter strokes in these areas. There are also a number of acupressure points believed to bring on labour, so it is important to be aware of these points. More information about prenatal and postnatal massages »

Taping

Sunil will sometimes offer to tape up affected areas where there is an injury, poor posture, or a movement dysfunction. Taping can be very effective in producing immediate pain relief, preventing injury in a sporting event, and reeducating neuromuscular function.

Different taping methods work in different ways. Sunil is trained to use fixomol, rock, rigid, and kinesio tapes. He will select the most appropriate tape and taping application based on your condition and specific requirements.

Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system is a circulatory system which transports fluid from the space around our cells into the bloodstream. It also plays an important role in our immune response. The circulation of lymph fluid is dependent on movement of the body as it does not have an organ such as the heart to pump it around. More information about lymphatic drainage »

Oncology Massage (cancer patients) and other Special Needs Massage

We recommend that clients with cancer and other special needs seek the services of a remedial massage therapist specialising in oncology (cancer) or special needs.
