Upper Back Pain – Causes
The causes and symptoms of upper back pain can be quite different to those causing lower back pain, because the upper back is fixed to the ribs which limit its range of movement. At Ravel Massage in Limassol, our professional massage therapists carry out assessments to help identify the cause of your upper back pain, and then work strategically to help eliminate it.
As with lower back pain, upper back pain can be caused by strained muscles. This is especially common with people who have excessive spinal curves, as in the case of scoliosis or kyphosis, as these conditions set up unnatural strain patterns in the muscles. It is very common for office workers to complain of upper back pain and neck pain, and this is usually the result of many years of adopting poor sitting postures for extended hours.
Sometimes upper back pain and middle back pain can be caused from trauma, such as a fall, or a sudden jolt during exercise. This may cause a rib to be pulled out of position, causing rib pain radiating pain to the middle and upper back. Due to the large number of possibilities, it is important that assessments are carried out to narrow down the likely cause, and then appropriate treatment given suited specifically for the actual cause of the back pain.
Deep Tissue Massage and Bowen Technique for Upper Back Pain
Our massage therapists provided targeted remedial massage for upper back pain. The treatment provided is based on what is found from the assessments.
A muscle strain in the upper back will most likely be treated using deep tissue massage and Bowen Therapy techniques, with the pressure and direction of strokes designed to suit the stage of the muscle strain (acute, sub-acute, chronic, etc). A ligament or joint problem may be treated with a combination of deep tissue massage and gentle mobilisation of the spine.
If a rib is not sitting in alignment, we use gentle techniques to guide the rib back in. Sometimes, the rib will find its place instantly, and at other times, it may take a day or two for the body to respond to treatment, particularly if the affected joints are inflamed.
Depending on the client’s symptoms and assessment, corrective exercises may be given to either stretch or strengthen specific areas of the upper back. We often recommend the use of a back roller, and we show you how to use this wonderful tool safely and effectively to prevent back problems.
