Shoulder Pain: Assessment and Treatment at Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol
Due to the huge range of movement that the shoulder joint is capable of, there is a wide range of possible shoulder pain causes, from a pinched nerve in the neck (sometimes accompanies by neck pain) to tendonitis of the shoulder muscles. This is why at Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol, we perform a detailed assessment of any shoulder muscle pain prior to providing treatment.
The movement of the shoulder blade on the rib cage provides a key role in the function of the shoulder joint, with any lack of mobility or function of the shoulder blade causing unnecessary shoulder muscle and joint strain, eventually causing shoulder injuries such as tendonitis of the rotator cuff muscles. In addition to checking the shoulder blade movement and function, we carry out a number of orthopaedic tests to further isolate the cause of the shoulder pain. These tests are designed to differentiate between muscle strains, tears in the labrum around the joint, sprain of the joint capsule itself, inflammation of bursas, degradation of the joint (arthritis), impingement of muscle tendons, frozen shoulder, etc.
There is rarely just one issue leading to the client’s shoulder pain. More commonly, a number of structures may be involved, for example, a combination of tendon impingement, tendonitis and an inflammation of a bursa. Sometimes, it is beneficial to obtain a scan such as an ultrasound to help confirm the assessment of the shoulder injury.
Shoulder Pain Relief at Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol
Once the likely causes have been confirmed, at Ravel Therapies Massage Limassol, we then develop a specific treatment plan to suit the shoulder injuries identified. Rather than providing a general massage to all the muscles in the area, we focus on the specific structures requiring treatment. We use a number of techniques including deep tissue massage, myofascial release therapy, muscle energy techniques, joint mobilisation and other advanced techniques such as manual strokes to help drain inflamed bursas. As the client progresses through their recovery, the shoulder pain treatment and massage strategies will also be modified to suit the stage of the recovery.
We provide specific shoulder pain exercises to assist clients in their recovery, as part of the treatment plan. The more diligent the client is in performing their exercises, the quicker will be their recovery. These exercises may also include exercises to help stabilise the shoulder blade and improve its overall stability and function.
